The National
Council of Master Thatchers Associations represents the county based
Master Thatchers Associations.
The County-based Master Thatchers Associations,
many of which began in 1947, joined together in 1987 to form the
National Council.
Thatching trade guilds never existed in earlier times, possibly because
of the diverse rural spread of the trade. Modern communications
enabled contact between craftsmen and a free flow of ideas began after
1947. This has led to a rapid modern development of this ancient
trade.
The thatching trade associations which began in 1947 were formed mostly
from the existing major thatching families, who were predominant in the
trade. Today's members are trade descendants from these origins
and have learnt their skills through a mix of intense training and
on-site experience.
Today, membership of a Master Thatchers Association is gained by the judgment
of the applicants peers, at the time of entry. Also, a commitment is
made to continue to work to the necessary high standards.
